About Olde Hickory Brewery
Olde Hickory Brewery has been making beer in Hickory, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, since 1994. It started on a 7-barrel system built from converted dairy equipment and quickly outgrew it. In 1997 the brewers began renovating an 1880 historic landmark building downtown, which now holds a 25-barrel brewhouse turning out batches of under 800 gallons, made with grains, hops and cultured yeast and no additives or preservatives.
The tasting room at the brewery pours 11 drafts and stocks more than 30 bottles and cans of the brewery's beer. The year-round lineup includes Hickory Stick Stout, Table Rock pale ale, Death By Hops IPA, Ruby Lager, Piedmont Pilsner and the Nova hazy IPAs; seasonal releases include a Märzen-style Oktoberfest and a Christmas Ale brewed with honey and spices. For guests who don't drink beer, there are craft sodas, wine, cider and seltzers, plus a weekly menu of barrel-aged cocktails at about $10 each. Beer is also sold to go.
The company runs four other spots around Hickory: Olde Hickory Station on Government Avenue, the Olde Hickory Tap Room on Union Square, Amos Howards on US 70 SW, with growler fills and kegs to go, and McGuires Pub. Hours differ by location, and only some serve food, so check before you go.
Second Wind Perennial Farms in Stony Point is about 30 minutes east. Visit the farm earlier in the day, then end with a stop in Hickory, with a designated driver if you plan to taste.
