Rush's has been serving the Midlands since 1940, and three generations of local families have grown up on its burgers. The Camden restaurant on West Dekalb Street is the chain's northeastern outpost; the other seven open locations are around Columbia, West Columbia and Lexington. The burgers are the reason to stop: the beef comes from a nearby meat market, is ground in-house and is never frozen, and the double cheeseburger is the house favorite.

The menu stays with the classics. Alongside burgers there are hot dogs and other sandwiches, fried chicken by the piece or as suppers to go, french fries, and a children's menu. Milkshakes are made by hand in nine flavors: chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, pineapple, peach, banana, cherry, Oreo and hot fudge cake. Hot fudge cake also comes as a dessert on its own.

The Camden store keeps long, steady hours, open every day from 10 am to 10 pm, so it works for an early lunch, a late supper or a shake on the drive home. Fried chicken suppers to go are a simple way to feed a family or group after a day out.

Lavender Flair, a lavender farm in Heath Springs with over 1,000 plants, is about 30 minutes north on US-521. Visits there are by appointment only, so set a time with the farm first and plan a Rush's stop on the way there or back.
