About St. James Winery

Jim and Pat Hofherr opened St. James Winery in 1970 in a town that had more than 1,000 acres of vineyards by 1922, many planted with Concord by Italian immigrant growers. They brought their children into the business from the start, and their son Peter Hofherr is now CEO. The winery made 8,000 gallons its first year and now makes more than 500,000 gallons annually, sold in Missouri and 16 other states. The list runs from dry to sweet, with fruit wines such as Cranberry Orange, Bubbly Blackberry, Cherry Moscato and Spiced Apple next to the grape wines.

The tasting room is open every day from 9 a.m., until 5 p.m. most days and 6 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Three $12 tastings each pour six wines: a host-guided personalized tasting, a Missouri varietal flight and a sweet wine flight, served with tasting notes at your table. Free cellar tours run daily at 1 and 3 p.m.; call at least a day ahead, wear closed-toe shoes and bring a coat, because the cellar sits around 35 degrees in winter and 55 in summer. From August through October, harvest work means tours are very limited.

The Bistro in the tasting room serves brunch and lunch Friday through Tuesday, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Next door, Public House Brewing Company pours its own beer with a farm-to-table menu, live music and events, and its outdoor garden area is described as family and pet friendly.

Lavender Rhapsody, a 40-acre farm in Bland with more than 2,000 lavender plants and you-pick in June, is about 40 minutes north, a natural pairing on an early-summer Saturday.
