About the Product

Action Shot is a hardy ice plant with large, glossy rose-red flowers marked by a wide fuchsia eye. It blooms in late spring and early summer, and the flowers practically cover the plant.

The evergreen, succulent foliage forms a mat just 2 to 4 inches tall that spreads about 2 feet wide over two years and keeps growing after that. It shines in rock gardens, on slopes, along walls and in containers, and it takes heat and drought in stride.

What it looks like

A low, flat, spreading succulent mat about 2 to 4 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide. Leaves are small, fleshy, cylindrical to finger-shaped, about half an inch to an inch long, bright to medium green with a slightly glistening surface. Daisy-like flowers about 1.5 to 2 inches across have many narrow, glossy petals in rose red, deepening to a large fuchsia eye around a small pale center. At peak bloom the flowers crowd so closely that the green mat is almost hidden beneath a carpet of color.

Growing it with lavender

It loves the same hot sun and lean, gravelly soil as lavender, making a low, evergreen carpet at the base of lavender plants that blooms just before lavender opens.

Care

Plant in full sun in lean, very well-drained soil, such as a rock garden, slope or gravel bed; water sparingly, since wet soil, especially in winter, leads to rot. Hardy in zones 6-10 with excellent drainage. No pruning needed; it stays evergreen and keeps spreading slowly over time.

Hardy in zones 6a–10b

Spring to early summer, so roots establish well before winter. Late planting raises winter losses.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant plugs in gritty soil after frost, in full sun. Water lightly to settle them; then let the soil dry between waterings. A pinch of tips helps them branch. Plugs knit into a mat in the first summer.

When to plant

Spring to early summer, so roots establish well before winter. Late planting raises winter losses.

How deep

Set the plug top level with the soil; keep the crown and stems on top of the gravel, not buried.

Spacing

About 16–24 in apart; each plant spreads into a mat.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or rocky; lean · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Avoid heavy or rich soils. Mix in coarse grit or pea gravel, or plant in a raised bed, rock wall or slope. Use gravel mulch, not wood mulch, around the crowns.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates a little light shade).

Flowers open in sun and close on cloudy days and at night.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Evergreen to semi-evergreen. Foliage may look reddish, purple or shriveled after winter and then plumps up and greens in mid-spring. Wait until late spring before pulling a plant that looks rough.

Care details are written for the whole ice plant group; a few are our best general guidance rather than cultivar-specific testing.
