All Gold is a solid-gold Japanese forest grass that seems to glow in shade. It is brighter, more upright and more vigorous than the classic striped form, staying about 9 to 14 inches tall.
Its soft, arching blades spill over rocks, down slopes and along the edges of walls and containers. It spreads slowly, so it will not crowd its neighbors, and deer usually leave it alone.
What it looks like
Soft, bamboo-like leaf blades about ¼ to ½ inch wide and 6 to 10 inches long are solid bright gold, turning more chartreuse in deeper shade. The leaves arch gracefully from thin, wiry stems, forming a low, upright-arching mound 9 to 14 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. In late summer, tiny airy sprays of reddish-brown flowers appear among the leaves. The plant looks like a small, glowing golden cascade in the shade.
Growing it with lavender
All Gold needs shade and steady moisture, so plant it along a shady path or in a woodland bed rather than in the full-sun lavender garden.
Care
Plant in part to full shade in rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil; morning sun gives the brightest gold. Hardy in zones 5 to 9. Cut back old foliage in early spring; it spreads slowly by rhizomes.
