About the Product

Angel Bells is a clustered bellflower with round heads of pure white, bell-shaped flowers held on upright stems in late spring and early summer. The clean white blooms stand out against rich, dark green leaves.

Plants reach about 14 to 18 inches tall and wide, a good size for lining a border, filling in a cottage garden or planting in groups. The flowers are long-lasting in a vase, and bees visit them often.

What it looks like

An upright clump about 14 to 18 inches tall and 16 to 20 inches wide, with dense basal foliage and stiff leafy flower stems. Leaves are lance-shaped to oval, 2 to 4 inches long, rich dark green with a slightly rough, matte texture. Each stem ends in a tight, rounded cluster 2 to 3 inches across made of many upward-facing, bell-shaped flowers in pure white, each about an inch long with five pointed lobes. At peak bloom the clump is topped with a dozen or more white flower balls standing just above the dark foliage.

Growing it with lavender

It handles full sun and blooms just before or with early lavender, so its white flower heads make a crisp companion at the edge of a lavender bed, as long as the soil does not stay dry for long stretches.

Care

Grow in full sun to part shade in average to fertile soil with regular water and good drainage; it appreciates neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Hardy in zones 3-8. Cut back flowering stems after bloom to tidy the plant, and divide crowded clumps every few years in spring.

How to grow Angel Bells

Bellflower · Campanula glomerata

Bellflowers like sun in cool summers, part shade where it's hot, and evenly moist but well-drained soil. Carpathian bellflower is a low, tidy edger; clustered bellflower is taller and spreads quickly.

Hardy in zones 3a–8b

Spring after hard frost or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant or pot up plugs soon after arrival. Keep them evenly moist and lightly shaded for a few days, then move to sun. Carpathian plugs grow into small mounds the first year and often bloom the same season.

When to plant

Spring after hard frost or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil surface.

Spacing

Carpathian: about 12–14 in. Clustered: about 12–18 in, and expect it to fill in.

Soil

Loam or sandy loam with some organic matter · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix in compost to hold moisture in sandy soil; in heavy clay, add compost and plant slightly high. Clustered bellflower tolerates neutral to alkaline soil.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part shade, especially afternoon shade in hot regions).

In Michigan, full sun to light shade works. In the South, give afternoon shade.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Leafy rosettes appear early in spring. Clustered bellflower sends up new shoots from spreading roots, sometimes a short distance from where you planted it.
