About the Product

Arizona Sun is a compact, award-winning blanket flower with big 3-inch blooms in fiery orange-red, each rimmed with a ring of golden yellow. It flowers from early summer into fall, giving steady color in borders, containers and cutting gardens.

The plant stays low, just 8 to 10 inches tall, and thrives in heat and poor soil. Butterflies are strongly drawn to it, and deer usually pass it by.

What it looks like

Daisy-like flowers about 3 inches across with broad, fringe-tipped petals that are fiery orange-red at the base and banded with bright golden yellow at the tips, around a domed maroon-red center. Flowers are held singly on short stems just above a low mound of foliage. Leaves are green, lance-shaped and softly hairy. The plant is a compact mound 8 to 10 inches tall and about 10 inches wide. At peak bloom it is covered in red-and-yellow bicolor flowers.

Growing it with lavender

Arizona Sun's red-and-gold blooms make a bright contrast at the feet of lavender, and both like full sun and lean, dry soil.

Care

Plant in full sun in lean, well-drained soil; it prefers poorer ground and resents wet winter soil. Hardy in zones 3 to 10 and very heat tolerant. Deadhead to keep it blooming, and cut back in late summer if it gets leggy.

Hardy in zones 3a–10b

Spring after frost, early enough to root in before winter.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant plugs in full sun after frost or pot into 4 in pots. Water lightly; let soil dry slightly between waterings. Plugs often bloom the first summer.

When to plant

Spring after frost, early enough to root in before winter.

How deep

Crown level with the soil surface; never buried.

Spacing

About 12–18 in apart.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or average loam; lean · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Don't add rich compost or fertilizer. In clay, loosen soil, mix in grit and plant on a slight mound; wet clay is the main cause of winter death.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates very light shade).

Needs full sun to bloom heavily and stay compact.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Fuzzy gray-green basal leaves appear in early to mid spring. If nothing shows by late May, the plant likely died over winter, which happens with this short-lived perennial.

Care details are written for the whole blanket flower group; a few are our best general guidance rather than cultivar-specific testing.
