About the Product

Athena Gold® is a very compact false sunflower with sunny yellow blooms that are packed with petals, so each flower lasts a long time. It flowers from midsummer into late summer on a bushy plant under two feet tall.

Use it at the front or middle of a border, in combination containers or as a cut flower. Butterflies and bees visit it often.

What it looks like

Daisy-like flowers about 2½ to 3 inches across, packed with several rows of bright sunny yellow petals around a small golden-orange center. Flowers are held in good numbers on branched stems just above the foliage. Leaves are glossy, deep green, triangular and coarsely toothed. The plant is a compact, bushy clump 18 to 24 inches tall and 16 to 20 inches wide. At peak bloom it is capped with a dense layer of bright yellow flowers.

Growing it with lavender

Its bright yellow flowers complement purple lavender, and its small size suits the front of a sunny lavender border.

Care

Plant in full sun to light shade in average, well-drained soil; it handles heat and some drought once established. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Deadhead to extend the bloom season.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

Arrives as a clump of fibrous roots with a crown of small reddish or green buds and old cut stems. Soak 20–30 minutes, plant crown at soil level, water in and keep moist until shoots appear.

Expect new growth in 6 to 8 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. Shoots appear in mid-spring, often with dark, reddish new leaves on variegated or dark-leaf types. Growth is quick once soil warms.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil surface, buds just at or below the surface.

Spacing

About 2–3 ft apart; taller cultivars need the most room.

Soil

Average loam; tolerates clay, sand and poor soils · pH 5.5–8.0

Fix-it tip: No special amendments needed. In very rich soil it grows tall and floppy; lean soil keeps it sturdy.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part sun).

In shade, stems get weak and floppy.
