Aureola is the classic golden Japanese forest grass, with nearly all-yellow leaves finely striped in green. Its most charming trait is how the blades all arch the same way, so a planting looks like a golden waterfall.
It grows 12 to 24 inches tall and slowly spreads, perfect for draping over rocks and wall edges, softening paths or filling containers. In fall the gold picks up pink and red tints.
What it looks like
Soft, bamboo-like leaves about ½ inch wide and 8 to 10 inches long are mostly golden yellow with thin green stripes, especially toward the edges. The blades arch and all lean in one direction from slender stems, forming a low, cascading mound 12 to 24 inches tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. In deep shade the yellow turns lime green, and in fall the leaves blush pink and red. Tiny airy flower sprays appear in late summer but are barely noticeable.
Growing it with lavender
Aureola wants shade and even moisture, so plant it in a shaded bed or along a woodland walk rather than with lavender in the sun.
Care
Grow in part to full shade in rich, moist but well-drained soil; part shade gives the best yellow. Hardy in zones 5 to 9. Cut back dead foliage in early spring; it spreads slowly.
