Ballerina Pink opens soft pink flowers set in dark mauve-pink calyxes, a delicate pairing that looks refined up close and gives each spike a subtle two-tone effect from a distance. Its florets are larger than those on many garden salvias.
It blooms in early summer on a compact plant under 2 feet tall. It suits cottage gardens, containers and sunny borders, and like other salvias it is loved by pollinators and ignored by deer and rabbits.
What it looks like
Upright, branched flower spikes 8 to 10 inches long with widely spaced, large hooded florets about 3/4 inch long in soft, pale pink, each sitting in a dark mauve-pink calyx. Spikes rise above a basal clump of foliage. Leaves are broad, oval to lance-shaped, 3 to 5 inches long, mid-green and crinkled. The plant is 18 to 20 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide. At peak it reads as an airy clump of pale pink spires with dusky mauve shading.
Growing it with lavender
Salvia wants the same full sun and lean, well-drained soil as lavender, and its upright spikes echo lavender's form while filling the gap before and after the main lavender bloom.
Care
Plant in full sun in average to fertile, well-drained soil; it handles dry spells once established. Hardy in zones 3-8 and needs sharp drainage to come through cold, wet winters; cut spent spikes back to the basal leaves after bloom to tidy the plant and encourage a few more flowers.
