About the Product

Banana Cream II is an improved version of a favorite yellow shasta daisy. Its buds open lemon yellow and slowly brighten to creamy white, so the plant shows a mix of yellow and cream flowers at once. It flowers more heavily, starts earlier and holds its yellow color longer than the original.

The tidy plant grows about 20 to 24 inches tall and wide and blooms from early summer into late summer, with more flowers if deadheaded. It is easy to grow and suits containers, borders, mass plantings and cutting.

What it looks like

Large, daisy-shaped flowers with overlapping petals that open lemon yellow and fade to creamy white, each with a golden yellow button center. Flowers of different ages mix yellow and cream on the same plant. They are held on sturdy stems just above a mound of glossy, dark green, lance-shaped, toothed leaves. The plant forms a neat, rounded clump about 20 to 24 inches tall and 20 to 22 inches wide. At peak the mound is covered with a mix of soft yellow and cream daisies.

Growing it with lavender

Shasta daisies share lavender's love of full sun and well-drained soil, and their crisp white flowers with gold centers make a classic cottage-garden partner for purple lavender in early summer.

Care

Plant in full sun in average, well-drained soil; water during dry spells but avoid soggy ground, especially in winter. Hardy in zones 5-9. Deadhead spent flowers to keep new buds coming, and divide clumps every few years in spring to keep them vigorous.

Hardy in zones 5a–9b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to grow on, or plant into amended soil once rooted.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level; don't bury the leafy rosette.

Spacing

12-24 in apart depending on variety.

Soil

Fertile, well-drained loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into sandy or clay soil. Wet winter soil is the top killer, so raise beds in heavy clay.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

In hot climates, a little afternoon shade extends bloom.

New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like
