About the Product

Blackbeard is a tall beardtongue with deep eggplant-purple foliage and dark purple flower stems that stand strictly upright. In early to midsummer the stems carry lilac-purple flowers with flared white throats.

After bloom, dark burgundy seed pods keep the stems attractive, and the plant does not flop over. At 28 to 34 inches, it fits the middle of the border or a naturalized planting. It takes heat and humidity, is very cold hardy, and is rarely bothered by pests. Hummingbirds and bees visit the flowers.

What it looks like

Tall, strictly upright, dark purple stems carry loose clusters of tubular flowers about an inch long, lilac-purple on the outside with flared white throats. The basal leaves are lance-shaped to oval, glossy, deep eggplant purple, forming a low mound from which the stems rise. After flowering, small rounded seed pods in dark burgundy remain on the stems. The plant grows about 28 to 34 inches tall in bloom and 24 inches wide. At peak bloom the pale lilac flowers stand out against the dark stems and foliage.

Growing it with lavender

Blackbeard likes the same sun and drainage as lavender, and its dark purple foliage and lilac flowers make a moody, tonal partner for lavender in early summer.

Care

Grow in full sun in average, well-drained soil; it tolerates drought once established but should not sit wet over winter. Hardy in zones 3-8. Leave the stems standing after bloom to enjoy the burgundy seed pods, then cut back to the basal foliage in late summer or early spring.

How to grow Blackbeard

Penstemon · Penstemon

Penstemon needs full sun and very well-drained soil. Poor drainage is the main reason it fails; many types are short-lived, but in lean, gritty soil they bloom reliably.

Spring after frost, or early fall at least 6 weeks before freeze.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

Arrives as a small crown with fibrous roots and perhaps a few leafy or reddish basal buds. Soak 20 minutes, plant crown at soil level in gritty soil, water once, then water lightly as needed.

Expect new growth in about 6 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. Many types keep a low rosette of leaves through winter, often reddish or purple. New growth starts early to mid spring.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Spring after frost, or early fall at least 6 weeks before freeze.

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level. Burying the crown or piling mulch against it invites rot.

Spacing

About 12–18 in apart, more for large types.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or loose loam; not compacted · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Loosen compacted soil and add grit or plant in raised beds. Skip rich compost. Gravel mulch helps keep crowns dry. Hybrid types are more forgiving of heavier soil than western species like P. barbatus.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part sun).

More shade means fewer flowers and leggy stems.
