About the Product

Blue Mouse Ears is a beloved miniature hosta with thick, almost rubbery round leaves in blue-green to gray-green. It forms a perfectly symmetrical little mound only about 8 inches tall and a foot wide.

In midsummer, flower buds held sideways swell like small balloons before opening to clusters of lavender bells on short 12-inch stems. It was named Hosta of the Year in 2008 and is ideal for containers, rock gardens, edging and collectors.

What it looks like

A small, perfectly symmetrical mound about 8 inches tall and 12 inches wide of thick, round, rubbery leaves in blue-green to gray-green, each an inch or two across. In midsummer, short stems about 12 inches tall hold balloon-like buds that open to clusters of lavender bell flowers. At peak the plant is a tidy blue-gray button of leaves with a small crown of lavender bells.

Growing it with lavender

It needs richer, moister soil and more shade than lavender, so give it a spot on the north side of the house or under a tree canopy with other shade plants.

Care

Best in light to full shade. Give it evenly moist, humus-rich soil that drains well, and water during dry spells; hardy in zones 3-9. Cut the foliage down after hard frost, and divide crowded clumps in spring as new shoots appear. Watch for slugs in damp springs.

How to grow Blue Mouse Ears

Hosta · Hosta

Hostas want shade to part shade and rich, moist, well-drained soil. Blue and big-leaved types (like H. sieboldiana) need the most shade; many gold and fragrant types tolerate more sun.

Hardy in zones 3a–9b

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant 20-cell plugs straight into the garden or a 1-gallon pot; pot 72-cell plugs into 4-inch pots to bulk up first. Keep in shade and evenly moist. Plugs take 3–5 years to show mature leaf size.

When to plant

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

How deep

Set the crown (where roots meet shoots) even with the soil surface. Plants from pots go at the same depth they grew.

Spacing

By mature size: minis 6–12 inches; medium 2 feet; giants 3–5 feet.

Soil

Rich, loamy, high in organic matter · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Mix in compost, composted manure or leaves. In clay, raise the planting area slightly so crowns don't sit wet over winter.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; morning sun).

Blue-leaved types keep their color best in shade. Gold types brighten with some morning sun; most scorch in hot afternoon sun.

New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Pointed shoots (eyes) push up in mid to late spring, later than many perennials, and unfurl over a couple of weeks. Small plants may stay dormant until May; a firm crown is alive.
