Buttered Popcorn is one of the best large-flowered reblooming daylilies. Its fragrant 6-inch blooms are a solid butter yellow with just a tiny green throat.
Good branching puts many flowers on each scape, starting in midsummer and returning later in the season. At about 32 inches tall it suits the middle of a sunny border.
What it looks like
Large, open flowers about 6 inches across with broad, gently ruffled tepals in solid butter yellow, the same color throughout, with a tiny green throat. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 32 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped medium green leaves. The foliage clump is about 19 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom several big butter-yellow flowers are open at once along the scapes.
Growing it with lavender
Its big butter-yellow flowers pair beautifully behind purple lavender in full sun and well-drained soil.
Care
Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Deadhead regularly and pull spent scapes to keep new buds coming, and divide crowded clumps every few years.
