About the Product

California Dreaming is a single-flowered hellebore with clear, unspotted yellow blooms about 3 inches across. Like other Lenten roses it is among the first perennials to flower, opening in early spring and lasting six weeks or more.

The leathery evergreen leaves look good year round, and the plant is ignored by deer and rabbits. It is ideal for naturalizing in a woodland garden or along a shady path, and early bees appreciate the flowers.

What it looks like

Single, open, cup-shaped flowers about 3 inches across with five broad, rounded sepals in clear soft yellow, unspotted, around a ring of pale green nectaries and a boss of creamy yellow stamens. Flowers nod slightly on thick stems held just above or among the leaves. Leaves are large, leathery, glossy dark green and divided into seven to nine toothed, finger-like leaflets. The plant forms a clump 18 to 24 inches tall and wide. At peak bloom in early spring the clump is covered with pale yellow cups over the dark evergreen leaves.

Growing it with lavender

Hellebores need shade and woodland soil, so plant them in a shady bed under trees or on the north side of the house rather than with lavender.

Care

Plant in part to full shade in humus-rich, well-drained soil; established plants tolerate dry shade. Hardy in zones 4 to 9. Cut off last year's tattered leaves in late winter so the new flowers show clearly.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

20-cell plugs are best potted into 1-quart or 4-inch pots and grown on in shade for a season before going into the ground. Expect them to bloom in a year or two once sized up.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level, never deeper; buried crowns may fail to bloom or rot.

Spacing

18–24 inches apart.

Soil

Rich, humusy loam · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Work in compost or leaf mold; they tolerate slightly alkaline soil. Avoid low spots that stay wet.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; morning sun).

Deciduous trees are ideal: sun in winter while blooming, shade in summer.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Evergreen. Flower buds push up from the crown in late winter (often February to April in Michigan), followed by new leaves. Young plug-grown plants may not bloom the first year.
