Cape Cod Boys is a Siberian iris with a seaside feel: periwinkle blue flowers with darker blue veins that build into a defined pattern toward the petal tips, finished with clear lemon yellow signals.
It blooms over a long stretch in early summer on plants about 27 to 32 inches tall. Even out of bloom, its wide, blue-green leaves keep it looking good. Use it in borders, rain gardens, near water or for cutting.
What it looks like
Periwinkle blue flowers with darker blue veining that intensifies into a defined pattern near the ends of the falls, each marked with a prominent clear lemon-yellow signal. Flowers are held on slender, upright stems above the leaves. Foliage is wider than typical for Siberian iris, grass-like and blue-green. The plant forms an upright clump about 27 to 32 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak the periwinkle flowers with yellow centers float above the cool blue-green leaves.
Growing it with lavender
Siberian iris prefers steadier moisture than lavender, so it fits best in a moister border or rain garden nearby, where its early-summer blooms can open just before the lavender begins.
Care
Grow in full sun to part shade in average to rich soil and keep it well watered through the season, especially in spring and early summer. Hardy in zones 3-9. Cut back the foliage in late fall or early spring, and divide crowded clumps in late summer; Siberian iris is not bothered by black walnut.
