Cherries Jubilee has one of the most unusual flower colors in false indigo: deep maroon buds open to bicolor maroon and yellow flowers that age to gold. The blooms sit on strong stems above blue-green leaves in late spring and early summer.
Extra branching on the flower stems makes it especially free flowering, and the plant stays shorter than many baptisias, about 30 to 42 inches tall, though mature clumps spread wide, up to about 6 feet. Ornamental seed pods extend interest into fall. It is long lived, drought tolerant and deer resistant.
What it looks like
Branched spikes 8 to 10 inches long of pea-shaped flowers that open from deep maroon buds into bicolor blooms of maroon and butter yellow, aging to gold, so maroon, yellow and gold mix on each spike. Spikes rise on strong stems above the foliage. Leaves are three-parted with oval blue-green leaflets on densely branched stems. The plant is a bushy, upright, spreading mound 30 to 42 inches tall, about 3 feet wide when young and widening to 5 or 6 feet at maturity. At peak bloom it is covered in warm maroon and gold spikes.
Growing it with lavender
Cherries Jubilee thrives in the same sunny, well-drained, lean soil as lavender, and its warm maroon and gold spikes contrast with lavender's cool purple as one finishes and the other begins.
Care
Plant in full sun to part shade in lean to average, well-drained soil; the deep taproot makes it drought tolerant once established. Hardy in USDA zones 4-9. Choose a permanent spot, since established plants do not like to be moved; expect a couple of seasons to settle in, and cut back in late fall or leave the seed pods for winter interest.
