About the Product

Cheyenne Sky is a compact red switch grass that is perfect for containers and small spaces. Its blue-green leaves start turning wine red in early summer, and by late summer nearly the whole clump is saturated with color.

Matching wine-red flower sprays top the plant in late summer, bringing it to about 3 feet tall. It is a hardy perennial option for the look of annual purple fountain grass and does well in tough, dry, sunny spots.

What it looks like

Narrow leaves about ½ inch wide emerge blue-green and turn deep wine red from the tips down starting in early summer, becoming almost entirely burgundy by late summer. They form a tight, upright, vase-shaped clump about 2 feet tall before bloom and 18 inches wide. In late summer, airy wine-red flower panicles rise just above the foliage, bringing the plant to about 3 feet. At peak the clump is a slim vase of burgundy topped with a matching reddish haze.

Growing it with lavender

Cheyenne Sky loves full sun like lavender, and its wine-red blades make a rich color contrast next to lavender's silvery foliage and purple spikes.

Care

Plant in full sun in almost any soil, from sand to clay; it is drought tolerant once established but also handles wetter spots. Hardy in zones 4 to 9. Leave it standing for winter interest and bird cover, then cut it back to a few inches in early spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring to early summer, once soil warms. Warm-season grasses root best in warm soil; avoid late-fall planting in cold zones.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away, set it in bright light out of harsh wind, and plant within a few days. If you wait, bump them into 3–4" pots. Harden off for a week before planting out, and keep the root ball moist the first 3–4 weeks.

When to plant

Spring to early summer, once soil warms. Warm-season grasses root best in warm soil; avoid late-fall planting in cold zones.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil; don't bury the base of the stems.

Spacing

24–36" apart, by variety; compact types closer.

Soil

Adaptable: sand, loam or clay · pH 5.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: No amending needed in most soils. Don't add compost or fertilizer to rich soil; extra fertility makes tall types flop.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light shade, with floppier stems).

6+ hours of sun keeps clumps upright and brings out red and blue leaf color. In shade, clumps open and lean.

New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

A warm-season grass: it wakes up late, often not showing new green blades until mid- to late spring, weeks after cool-season grasses. Don't dig it out—look for green at the base.
