About the Product

Cinderella is a native swamp milkweed that offers about three months of vanilla-scented, rose pink flowers in large clusters from midsummer into early fall. Deadheading the first round brings another flush about a month later.

The flowers are loaded with nectar and pollen, drawing monarchs and other butterflies, hummingbirds and bees, and the leaves feed monarch caterpillars. It grows three to five feet tall and is easy care in sunny spots with average to wet soil, including rain gardens and pond edges. Deer leave it alone.

What it looks like

Rounded, flat-topped clusters 3 to 4 inches across of many small, star-shaped flowers in rose pink with paler pink crowns, held at the tips of tall, branching stems. Leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, smooth and medium green, paired along stiff, upright stems. The plant is an upright, vase-shaped clump 3 to 5 feet tall and 1 to 3 feet wide. At peak bloom the top of the plant is dotted with pink clusters busy with butterflies. Slender upright seed pods follow.

Growing it with lavender

Swamp milkweed likes sun but wants much more moisture than lavender, so plant it in a rain garden, near a downspout or along a pond edge rather than in the dry lavender bed.

Care

Grow in full sun in average to consistently moist soil; it thrives in wet spots but adapts to ordinary garden soil. Hardy in USDA zones 3-9. It emerges late in spring, so mark its location; deadhead the first flowers to encourage a second bloom.

Hardy in zones 3a–9b

Spring after frost, or early fall. Plant butterfly weed where you want it for good; its long taproot hates moving.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

Butterfly weed arrives as a thick, carrot-like taproot with small buds at the top; it can look like a dead stick. Plant vertically, buds up and 1–2 inches deep. Don't snap or bend the root. Swamp milkweed roots are fibrous; set the crown at soil level.

Expect new growth in 10 weeks or more after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. Both are among the last perennials up, often late May to mid June in Michigan. Mark the spot and don't dig. Shoots appear as thin, reddish stems. Bloom is June–August.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Spring after frost, or early fall. Plant butterfly weed where you want it for good; its long taproot hates moving.

How deep

Set butterfly weed's crown buds about 1–2 inches below the soil, taproot straight down. Plant swamp milkweed with the crown at soil level.

Spacing

Butterfly weed 12–18 inches; swamp milkweed 18–24 inches.

Soil

Butterfly weed: sandy, gravelly or lean loam. Swamp milkweed: loam or clay · pH 5.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Butterfly weed rots in wet clay, so plant it on a slope or raised spot without adding compost. Swamp milkweed is happy in heavy, moist soil; just add compost to dry sand.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

Shade causes leggy stems and fewer flowers for both species.
