About the Product

Cloud Cover is a silvery groundcover that wakes up early in spring and spreads into a soft carpet. In late spring it disappears under a blanket of pure white, star-shaped flowers.

After bloom, the dense silver foliage keeps its shape and color through summer and into late fall. It stays just 4 to 6 inches tall and spreads over 2 feet wide, compact with thick leaves and large flowers, and it thrives on slopes, in rock gardens, along stone walls and in dry, sunny spots.

What it looks like

A low, dense, spreading mat about 4 to 6 inches tall and 26 to 32 inches wide. Leaves are narrow, about three-quarters of an inch long, thick and woolly, in an intense silver-white that reads almost frosted. In late spring, short stems hold masses of star-shaped white flowers about three-quarters of an inch across, each with five notched petals and a small yellow-green center. At peak bloom the silver carpet is completely covered in bright white flowers like a layer of fresh snow.

Growing it with lavender

It loves the same full sun and lean, gravelly soil as lavender, and its silver mat and white late-spring flowers make a bright, low carpet in front of lavender before lavender begins to bloom.

Care

Plant in full sun in lean to average soil with sharp drainage; it handles drought well once established and dislikes wet feet. Hardy in zones 3-7. Shear lightly after flowering to keep the mat dense and tidy.

Snow-in-Summer · Cerastium tomentosum

Snow-in-summer needs full sun and sharply drained, lean soil. It spreads into a silver mat; in poor drainage or humid heat it rots out.

Hardy in zones 3a–7b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Plant 72-cell plugs straight into gritty soil once rooted. Don't overwater new plugs; let the surface dry between waterings.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Crown at soil level; never bury the stems. A thin gravel mulch keeps the mat dry.

Spacing

12-18 in apart; it fills in quickly.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly, or rocky soil · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Mix grit or coarse sand into clay, or plant on slopes, walls, and raised beds. Skip compost and fertilizer.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates very light shade).

In shade it thins out and flowers poorly.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Evergreen to semi-evergreen. The silver mat may look flat or patchy in early spring; fresh growth fills in by mid spring and white flowers follow in late spring.
