Copper King is a strong foliage plant for shade. New leaves are bright orange with copper red centers and yellow edges, and at about 5 inches across with deep lobes, they resemble small maple leaves.
The plant is very vigorous for a foamy bells, forming a mound 10 to 12 inches tall and 18 to 20 inches wide. Red stems carry white flowers in late spring, 18 to 24 inches tall. It is a good pick for shade borders, edging and containers where warm color is welcome.
What it looks like
A low, full mound 10 to 12 inches tall and 18 to 20 inches wide of large, deeply cut, maple-like leaves about 5 inches across. New leaves are bright orange with copper red centers and thin yellow margins. In late spring, red stems 18 to 24 inches tall carry frothy spikes of tiny white star-shaped flowers. At peak the plant is a glowing orange and copper clump with white spires above.
Growing it with lavender
Copper King needs shade, so plant it in a shaded bed away from the lavender, where its orange leaves stand out against ferns, hostas and dark foliage.
Care
Best in part to full shade. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil with steady moisture; avoid wet winter spots. Hardy in zones 4-9; clean up old leaves in early spring.
