About the Product

Cotton Ball is a companion to Cotton Candy, with the same tall, sturdy, columnar form but clear white flowers. Wispy white sprays sit on dark stems, a crisp contrast that looks especially good in the evening garden.

The dense pillar of fine-textured leaves adds height to narrow spaces, and the long stems and lasting flowers make it an excellent cut flower. Deer and rabbits usually leave it alone.

What it looks like

Airy, rounded clusters of tiny flowers made of fluffy, thread-like stamens in clear white, forming cotton-like puffs 3 to 5 inches across on dark purple-black stems. The flowers sit just above the foliage. Leaves are finely divided with small, rounded, lobed leaflets in medium green, densely covering the stems. The plant is a narrow, columnar pillar 38 to 42 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak it looks like a tall green column capped with white puffs on dark stems.

Growing it with lavender

Meadow rue prefers richer, more evenly moist soil than lavender, so plant it in a nearby border with some afternoon shade, where its airy flower sprays can rise behind lower plants.

Care

Grow in full sun to part shade in average to fertile soil that stays reasonably moist; afternoon shade helps in hot, dry spots. Hardy in zones 5-8; cut the flowering stems back after bloom if the plant looks tired, and leave it undisturbed once established.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away and keep it in bright shade, never hot sun. Plant within a few days or move into 3–4" pots. Set each plug so its top is level with the soil, and keep it evenly moist for the first month.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level; don't bury it.

Spacing

18–24" apart.

Soil

Rich, organic loam · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Work in compost or leaf mold and mulch to keep roots cool and moist. Avoid dry, sandy spots.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool northern gardens if kept moist).

Morning sun and afternoon shade are ideal. Taller types may lean toward light in deeper shade.
