About the Product

Desert Plains is a large fountain grass with fine, narrow leaves in an upright, vase-shaped clump, a strong focal point for sunny beds. Starting in midsummer the leaf tips turn deep red, and by fall the whole plant glows orange and gold.

In early fall, fuzzy 5-inch bottlebrush plumes open smoky purple and age to tan above the foliage. It blooms and colors more reliably than older fountain grasses and is deer resistant.

What it looks like

Fine, narrow green leaves about ¼ inch wide form an upright, vase-shaped clump 3 to 4 feet tall and wide. In midsummer the leaf tips begin turning deep red, and in fall the whole clump shifts to orange, gold and russet. In early fall, fuzzy, cylindrical bottlebrush plumes about 5 inches long rise above the foliage on arching stems, opening smoky purple and aging to soft tan. At peak the plant is a fountain of warm fall color studded with fuzzy plumes.

Growing it with lavender

Desert Plains likes full sun like lavender, and its fuzzy plumes and orange-gold fall color make a warm late-season partner beside lavender.

Care

Plant in full sun in average to fertile, well-drained soil; it tolerates dry spells once established. Hardy in zones 5 to 9. Leave it standing for winter and cut back in early spring.

Hardy in zones 5a–9b

Spring through early summer, once soil is warm. Avoid late-fall planting.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and tender. Pot into 4-inch pots and grow on 3–5 weeks in bright light, or plant out after frost. Keep evenly moist, harden off a week, and set the plug top level with the soil. Warm-season grass plugs grow fastest in warm weather, so don't rush them out.

When to plant

Spring through early summer, once soil is warm. Avoid late-fall planting.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil surface.

Spacing

Dwarf types 18–24 inches; standard types 24–36 inches.

Soil

Most soils, from sandy to clay loam · pH 5.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: Adaptable. In heavy clay, add compost so the crown isn't sitting wet over winter.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

In shade it flowers less and flops open.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Warm-season grass: new green blades don't appear until mid to late spring, after soil warms. Old tan foliage over winter is normal. Plumes appear mid to late summer.
