About the Product

Electric Neon Purple carries large, 3-inch bee balm flowers in a bright fuchsia-purple from midsummer into late summer. The plant is a medium size, about 22 to 24 inches tall and wider than it is tall.

It has very good resistance to powdery mildew and other common leaf diseases, so the deep green foliage stays clean through the season. Plant it in the middle of a border or in a big container, and expect a steady stream of hummingbirds, butterflies and bees.

What it looks like

Large, shaggy flower heads about 3 inches across are made of many tubular florets in vivid fuchsia-purple, radiating out from a central crown on purple-tinged bracts. Leaves are opposite, oval to lance-shaped, deep green and toothed along square stems. The plant forms a broad, rounded clump about 22 to 24 inches tall and 28 to 30 inches wide. At peak bloom the fuchsia heads are scattered evenly across the top of the clump, standing just above the deep green leaves.

Growing it with lavender

Bee balm prefers richer, more evenly moist soil than lavender, so set it in a neighboring bed with better soil and regular water, where its fuchsia-purple heads carry on the summer color and bee traffic near your lavender.

Care

Grow in full sun to part shade in average to fertile soil with regular water, especially during summer dry spells. Hardy in zones 4-8. Give it room for air to move around the stems to help keep leaves clean, deadhead faded heads for a longer show, and divide the clump every few years in spring.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away, set it in bright light out of harsh wind, and plant within a few days. If you wait, bump them into 3–4" pots. Harden off for a week before planting out, and keep the root ball moist the first 3–4 weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level.

Spacing

18–24" apart for air flow.

Soil

Loam; tolerates clay · pH 5.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: Add compost to sandy soil to hold moisture. It handles clay well; just loosen the area.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part shade).

Full sun and air flow limit mildew and keep stems upright.
