Elijah Blue is a favorite blue fescue with soft, powdery blue foliage that holds its color all year. It forms a tidy, rounded tuft just 8 to 10 inches tall and is one of the longer-lived, more durable varieties.
In early summer it sends up many slender stems topped with wheat-like seed heads. It prefers dry conditions, so it is perfect for rock gardens, troughs, pots, coastal plantings and sunny edging.
What it looks like
Fine, needle-like leaves in a soft, powdery blue form a small, dense, rounded tuft about 8 to 10 inches tall and wide, like a spiky blue pincushion. In early summer, numerous thin stems rise several inches above the tuft, topped with narrow, wheat-like seed heads that start blue-green and ripen to tan. The foliage has a slightly frosted, matte finish. At peak the plant is a crisp blue ball with a light spray of tan stems.
Growing it with lavender
Elijah Blue shares lavender's taste for full sun and dry, lean soil, and its small powder-blue tufts edge a lavender bed neatly all year.
Care
Plant in full sun to light shade in lean, sharply drained soil; avoid wet or heavy soil. Hardy in zones 4 to 8. Trim off seed heads after they brown and comb out dead leaves in spring.
