About the Product

Evening Gown makes a big impression with oversized, glossy black leaves up to 6 inches across, each edged in deep ruffles. The texture is bold enough to anchor a container on its own or break up fine-leaved plants in a border.

The mound grows 12 to 14 inches tall and up to 2 feet wide. In midsummer, sturdy stems hold pink buds that open to white flowers. Color and vigor are best in part shade, and it has performed well in university trials, including in Michigan.

What it looks like

A substantial rounded mound 12 to 14 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide of very large, glossy, near-black leaves up to 6 inches across, each with deeply ruffled, wavy margins that catch highlights. Stout flower stems rise 18 to 20 inches in midsummer with narrow clusters of pink buds opening to small white bells. At peak the plant looks like a mound of polished black ruffles topped by pale pink-white wands.

Growing it with lavender

Its large black ruffled leaves suit a part-shade bed rather than the lavender row; pair it there with ferns, chartreuse hostas or silver foliage.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade but colors and performs best in part shade. Tolerates poor to average soil as long as it drains well; keep watered during dry spells. Hardy in zones 4-9; remove spent flower stems and winter-damaged leaves in spring.

How to grow Evening Gown

Coral Bells · Heuchera

Coral bells want part shade and rich, well-drained soil that stays lightly moist. Watch for crowns heaving out of the ground after winter.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
