About the Product

Everillo is a solid-gold form of the popular Evergold sedge. Its long, thin leaves start chartreuse near the center and turn bright golden yellow as they get light, spilling outward in a soft, low fountain.

It stays about 10 to 12 inches tall but spreads more than 2 feet wide, so it makes a bright groundcover, edging plant or container spiller. It holds its foliage through much of the year and deer leave it alone.

What it looks like

Very narrow, grass-like leaves about ⅛ inch wide are chartreuse green near the crown and turn clear golden yellow toward the tips. They arch and cascade outward in every direction from the center, forming a low, flowing mound about 10 to 12 inches tall and 28 to 32 inches wide. Short tan flower spikes appear briefly just above the foliage in spring. Through the season the plant looks like a soft, bright gold fountain spilling onto the ground.

Growing it with lavender

Everillo prefers part shade and moister soil than lavender, so use it to brighten a shaded bed or container near the house rather than in full-sun lavender plantings.

Care

Plant in part shade with morning sun for the best gold color; in deep shade it stays chartreuse. Give it average, moist but well-drained soil. Hardy in zones 5 to 9; comb out or trim tired leaves in early spring.

How to grow EverColor Everillo

Sedge · Carex oshimensis

Sedges are grassy clumps for part shade and moist soil. Japanese types (C. oshimensis, C. morrowii) are evergreen, the native woodland type (C. laxiculmis) handles dry shade, and Bowles' Golden (C. elata) loves wet soil.

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant 72-cell plugs directly in spring or fall, or pot up into 4-inch pots to grow on. Keep moist and out of hot sun until new growth shows.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Plant at the same depth as in the plug, with the base of the leaves at soil level.

Spacing

12–18 inches apart for most; up to 24 inches for Bowles' Golden.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add compost to hold moisture. C. elata will grow in boggy soil or pond edges; others need moisture but not standing water.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; morning sun).

Gold-leaved types like Bowles' Golden color best with some sun if kept wet; hot afternoon sun scorches Japanese sedges.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Japanese sedges stay evergreen and may look tattered after winter; new blades push up in spring. C. elata dies back and re-sprouts in mid-spring.
