About the Product

Fanal is one of the most popular red astilbes and one of the earliest reds to bloom. Its bright red plumes stand in upright spires in early summer, adding strong color to shade gardens.

The leaves emerge mahogany red in spring and turn green by summer, giving an extra season of interest. At about 20 inches tall, it is a vigorous grower that fits the front or middle of a shaded border, containers and mass plantings. Deer and rabbits avoid it.

What it looks like

Upright, narrow spires 6 to 8 inches long of tiny bright crimson red flowers, densely packed, held on reddish stems above the leaves. Leaves are compound, finely divided and toothed, emerging glossy mahogany red in spring and maturing to deep green. The plant is a compact, upright clump about 20 inches tall and 18 to 20 inches wide. At peak bloom it holds a cluster of vivid red spires over dark foliage.

Growing it with lavender

Astilbe needs moist, rich soil and shade, the opposite of lavender's dry, sunny bed, so plant it in a shade garden or along a damp woodland edge with hostas and ferns.

Care

Astilbe grows best in part shade in rich, humus-rich soil that never dries out; in the north it takes more sun if kept moist. Hardy in USDA zones 4-9. Mulch to hold moisture, water during dry spells to prevent leaf scorch, and leave the dried plumes for winter interest before cutting back in spring.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

Expect a woody, knobby crown with wiry dark roots and plump pink or reddish buds. Soak 1-2 hours, then plant with buds up and just under the soil. Water well. Shoots may take several weeks.

Expect new growth in 6 to 8 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. A later riser. Reddish or bronze shoots appear mid to late spring, often after hostas start. Bare root plants can take 4-6 weeks to show growth.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Spring or early fall, while soil is cool and moist.

How deep

Set the crown so the buds sit just at to about 1 in below the soil surface. Crowns rise over time; top-dress with compost.

Spacing

15-24 in depending on variety; dwarf types closer.

Soil

Rich, humusy loam · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Dig in plenty of compost or leaf mold to hold water. In sandy soil add extra organic matter and mulch 2-3 in. Avoid winter-soggy spots.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun only with constantly moist soil; light full shade).

Afternoon shade prevents leaf scorch. A. chinensis types handle a bit more sun and dryness than A. x arendsii and A. japonica.
