Live plants are pickup only June 1–September 30. Plugs and potted plants cannot use our shipping path to AZ, CA, HI, ID, NV, OR, UT, or WA; pickup may remain available. Soil-free bare root plants may ship to those states during March 1–May 31 when all remaining rules pass. Montana plug and potted-plant arrivals must be October 1–May 31.

We choose neem oil and lower-impact plant care instead of routinely drenching our greenhouse with lab-manufactured pesticides. We are exploring a screened growing house that may expand future shipping options.

About the Product

Fearfully and Wonderfully Made is a fancy mid-sized daylily with 5½-inch coral pink flowers that look larger thanks to their wide petals and pie-crust edges. A rich cranberry red eye repeats in the petal margins, which are trimmed in yellow.

Well-branched scapes carry lots of buds for a long midsummer show with good rebloom afterward.

What it looks like

Flowers about 5½ inches across with wide coral pink petals, a rich cranberry red eye, cranberry red margins finished with a thin yellow edge, pie-crust ruffling and a green-yellow throat. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 26 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped medium green leaves. The foliage clump is about 16 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom many coral-and-cranberry flowers crowd the branched scapes.

Growing it with lavender

Its coral and cranberry tones warm up a lavender bed and share lavender's taste for full sun and good drainage.

Care

Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Remove spent scapes promptly to encourage a later round of flowers, and divide crowded clumps every few years.

You'll get one or more 'fans' of trimmed leaves on a crown with thick, tuberous roots. Soak roots for a few hours, then spread them over a mound of soil in the hole and cover so the crown sits no more than 1 inch deep.

Expect new growth in about 6 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. Green shoots break through in early to mid spring. Evergreen types may look mushy after winter but regrow. Bloom varies by variety, from early summer to late summer.
