Firefly Fuchsia opens deep, saturated fuchsia pink and gradually softens to light pink, so each plant carries several shades at once. The wide, flat flower clusters bloom from early summer through late summer over a mound of fine, ferny green leaves.
At about two feet tall, it fits the middle of a sunny border, a cottage garden or a patio container. It stands up to heat, drought and poor soil once established, and pollinators use the flower heads as landing pads. It earned a top performer rating in university ornamental trials.
What it looks like
Broad, flat flower clusters 3 to 4 inches wide packed with tiny five-petaled florets in deep fuchsia pink with small pale centers, older clusters fading to soft light pink. Fresh and aged clusters mix on the same plant, giving a two-tone pink effect. Clusters rise on firm, upright stems just above the foliage. Leaves are medium green, finely cut and feathery. The plant forms a rounded, upright clump 22 to 24 inches tall and 26 to 30 inches wide, covered in pink plates at peak bloom.
Growing it with lavender
Firefly Fuchsia shares lavender's love of hot sun and lean, well-drained soil, and its fuchsia-to-pink flower plates look lovely next to purple lavender spikes during their shared midsummer bloom.
Care
Plant in full sun and lean to average, well-drained soil; water regularly the first season, then only during long dry spells. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8. Shear the stems back by about half once the first flush fades to encourage a second round of flowers and keep the clump tidy.
