Firefly Peach Sky blooms in light peachy orange that ages to soft yellow, so new and older flower heads blend together like the blush on a ripe peach. It is one of the taller yarrows, reaching about three feet, with sturdy stems that hold the wide flower heads upright.
Use it toward the middle or back of a sunny border, in prairie and cottage plantings, or as a long-lasting cut and dried flower. It handles poor soil and dry spells well once established, draws in butterflies and bees, and is rarely bothered by deer or rabbits.
What it looks like
Wide, flat flower clusters 3 to 5 inches across made of tiny florets; fresh clusters are light peachy orange with apricot tones, older ones fade to buttery yellow, creating a warm blend of peach, apricot and yellow across the plant. Clusters sit on tall, stiff, upright stems. Foliage is green, finely divided and fernlike, concentrated in the lower half of the plant. Habit is tall and upright, 32 to 36 inches tall and 28 to 32 inches wide. At peak bloom the plant looks like a cloud of peach and yellow plates.
Growing it with lavender
Firefly Peach Sky grows happily in the same sunny, dry, well-drained spots as lavender, and its warm peach and yellow tones make a cheerful complement to lavender's cool purple in midsummer.
Care
Plant in full sun and lean to average, well-drained soil; water regularly the first season, then only during long dry spells. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8. Rich soil and heavy feeding make the stems lanky. Shear the stems back by about half once the first flush fades to encourage a second round of flowers and keep the clump tidy.
