Ghost is a hybrid between the Japanese painted fern and the lady fern, with frosted, pale apple-green fronds that seem to glow in dim light. Dark purple stems hold the broad fronds firmly upright.
It grows taller than most painted ferns, 2 to 3 feet, and tolerates drier soil better than many of its relatives. It lights up shady beds and pairs well with dark-leaved shade plants.
What it looks like
Broad, lance-shaped fronds are finely divided into many leaflets with a frosted, silvery-white overlay on pale apple green, looking almost ghostly white in shade. Stems and midribs are dark purple, contrasting with the pale blades. The fronds stand stiffly upright, forming a vase-shaped clump 24 to 36 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. In summer the clump is full and upright, pale and luminous against darker plants.
Growing it with lavender
Ghost fern belongs in the shade garden rather than the sunny lavender beds; use it to brighten a shaded corner under trees or on the north side of a building.
Care
Plant in part to full shade in humus-rich soil with average to consistent moisture; it copes with somewhat drier soil than many ferns once established. Hardy in zones 3 to 8. Remove old fronds in early spring.
