Glamour Girl is a tall garden phlox carrying big heads of hot coral-pink flowers on dark purple stems. As the flowers age, they soften to a lighter coral, so each head shows a range of shades.
It blooms from mid through late summer and keeps bright green, healthy leaves on strong stems all season. It shows good resistance to powdery mildew and handles hot, humid summers well. At about 32 to 36 inches, it suits the middle of the border and is a pollinator favorite.
What it looks like
Large, dome-shaped panicles are made of flat, five-petaled flowers about 1 inch across in hot coral pink, with the older flowers fading to light coral pink, so each head is two-toned. The panicles are held on tall, sturdy, dark purple stems. Leaves are lance-shaped, bright green and arranged in pairs up the stems. The plant forms an upright clump about 32 to 36 inches tall and 24 to 30 inches wide. At peak bloom large coral heads cap each dark stem above clean green leaves.
Growing it with lavender
Phlox enjoys sun like lavender but wants richer soil and more regular water, so plant it in an adjacent cottage border, where its coral-pink flowers pick up as the first lavender bloom winds down.
Care
Grow in full sun to part shade in average to fertile soil kept evenly moist; full sun and good air flow give the most flowers and the healthiest leaves. Hardy in zones 3-8. Deadhead spent flower clusters to encourage rebloom, and divide every few years in spring to keep the clump vigorous.
