About the Product

Goatee is an unusually free-flowering goat's beard that bursts into clouds of dense cream flower plumes in early summer. Finely cut, dark green leaves add texture before and after bloom.

It stays a manageable two feet tall and a bit wider, fitting borders, containers and shade gardens. It adapts to full sun through full shade, though it needs more water in sun and grows slightly taller in shade. Bees visit the flowers, and deer leave it alone.

What it looks like

Dense, feathery, branched plumes of tiny cream flowers 6 to 8 inches long held just above the foliage, so many that they form soft clouds over the plant. Leaves are finely dissected, fern-like and dark green with a slight gloss. The plant forms a rounded, bushy mound 24 to 26 inches tall and 26 to 28 inches wide. At peak bloom it is covered with fluffy cream plumes.

Growing it with lavender

Goat's beard wants rich, moist soil and shade, so it belongs in a woodland or shade garden rather than beside lavender; plant it with hostas, ferns and astilbe.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade in fertile, humus-rich soil kept evenly moist; in full sun it needs extra water and stays a little shorter. Hardy in USDA zones 3-7. Choose its spot carefully, since established plants are hard to move; it is slow the first couple of years, then fills out. Cut back flower stems after bloom or leave them for winter interest.

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Pot 72-cell plugs into 3–4 inch pots of moist mix and grow on in bright shade until roots fill the pot, then plant out. Keep them evenly moist the whole time.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level, the same depth as in the plug.

Spacing

Large types 3–4 feet apart; compact hybrids 18–24 inches; dwarf types about 12 inches. Check the plant's mature size.

Soil

Rich, humusy loam · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add plenty of compost or leaf mold to hold moisture. In dry or sandy soils, mulch 2–3 inches deep to keep roots cool.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; full sun only in cool climates with constantly moist soil).

In hot summers, afternoon sun browns the leaves.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Shoots emerge from a woody crown in mid-spring, often reddish, then leaf out fast. Plugs in their first year may stay small and not bloom until year two or three.
