Gold Heart puts a bright twist on the classic bleeding heart with glowing yellow foliage that lights up the shade garden in spring. In late spring, arching sprays of pink-and-white hearts dangle above the golden leaves.
It is a bit smaller than the standard form, reaching up to 2 feet tall. The foliage softens in color as the season goes on, and like other old-fashioned bleeding hearts it may go dormant in summer, so plant companions nearby.
What it looks like
A bushy, rounded clump about 18 to 24 inches tall and 2 to 3 feet wide with fleshy, pinkish stems. Leaves are deeply cut into broad lobes, 6 to 8 inches long, in bright golden yellow in spring, softening to yellow-green later. Arching stems carry rows of dangling, puffy heart-shaped flowers about an inch long with rose-pink outer petals and white tips. At peak bloom the pink hearts hang in arcs over glowing gold foliage.
Growing it with lavender
Bleeding heart needs shade and moist soil, unlike lavender, so plant it in a shady bed under trees or along a north wall with hostas and ferns.
Care
Plant in part to full shade in rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil. Hardy in zones 3-9. The plant often goes dormant by midsummer, especially in dry soil, so plant hostas, ferns or hardy geraniums nearby to fill the gap and keep it watered in spring to hold the foliage longer.
