Guacamole has huge, glossy apple green leaves edged in streaked dark green margins, much like the look of an avocado. The centers turn a brighter gold in summer and with more sun, while the margins stay dark.
It grows quickly to about 22 inches tall and 38 to 48 inches wide and tolerates more sun than most hostas. In late summer, very fragrant pale lavender flowers rise on 3-foot stems. It was named Hosta of the Year in 2002 and holds a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.
What it looks like
A mounded clump about 22 inches tall and 38 to 48 inches wide of huge, glossy, heart-shaped leaves with apple green to gold centers and streaked dark green margins. In late summer, stems about 36 inches tall carry flared, very fragrant pale lavender trumpet flowers. At peak the plant is a shiny lime-and-green mound with tall lavender flowers above.
Growing it with lavender
Keep it out of the lavender field and plant it in a moist, shaded bed where it can pair with coral bells, ferns and bleeding hearts.
Care
Grows in full sun to full shade; more sun brightens the gold centers. Give it evenly moist, humus-rich soil that drains well, and water during dry spells; hardy in zones 3-9. Cut the foliage down after hard frost, and divide crowded clumps in spring as new shoots appear. Watch for slugs in damp springs.
