Hearts on Fire brings true red flowers and golden foliage to the old-fashioned bleeding heart. The leaves emerge early in spring, golden with bronze highlights on dark stems, and the red hearts appear in late spring, held out beyond the foliage.
The long flower stems bloom for longer than older types. Plants reach 18 to 24 inches tall. It may go dormant in summer, so plant hostas or ferns nearby to fill in.
What it looks like
A bushy, rounded clump about 18 to 24 inches tall and 2 to 3 feet wide with dark reddish-bronze stems. Leaves are deeply cut into broad lobes, 6 to 8 inches long, bright gold with bronze tints when young. Long arching stems reach out past the foliage carrying rows of dangling, puffy heart-shaped flowers about an inch long in true red with small white tips. At peak bloom the red hearts arc over the gold leaves on dark stems.
Growing it with lavender
Bleeding heart needs shade and moist soil, unlike lavender, so plant it in a shady bed under trees or along a north wall with hostas and ferns.
Care
Plant in part to full shade in rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil. Hardy in zones 3-9. The plant often goes dormant by midsummer, especially in dry soil, so plant hostas, ferns or hardy geraniums nearby to fill the gap and keep it watered in spring to hold the foliage longer.
