About the Product

High Society is a small hosta with wide blue margins around a yellow center that brightens to a parchment tone by midsummer. It is a variegated form of the well-known June, with distinctly wider margins.

It grows slowly into a neat clump about 8 inches tall and 15 inches wide. Pale lavender flowers open just above the foliage in late summer. It is well suited to containers, edging and specimen spots near paths.

What it looks like

A small, neat clump about 8 inches tall and 15 inches wide of pointed, heart-shaped leaves with a yellow center that lightens to parchment by midsummer, framed by wide blue margins. In late summer, stems about 12 inches tall carry pale lavender bell flowers just above the foliage. At peak the plant is a compact blue-and-cream mound with lavender flowers above.

Growing it with lavender

It needs richer, moister soil and more shade than lavender, so give it a spot on the north side of the house or under a tree canopy with other shade plants.

Care

Grows best in part to full shade. Give it evenly moist, humus-rich soil that drains well, and water during dry spells; hardy in zones 3-9. Cut the foliage down after hard frost, and divide crowded clumps in spring as new shoots appear. It grows slowly and stays small.

How to grow High Society

Hosta · Hosta

Hostas want shade to part shade and rich, moist, well-drained soil. Blue and big-leaved types (like H. sieboldiana) need the most shade; many gold and fragrant types tolerate more sun.

Hardy in zones 3a–9b

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant 20-cell plugs straight into the garden or a 1-gallon pot; pot 72-cell plugs into 4-inch pots to bulk up first. Keep in shade and evenly moist. Plugs take 3–5 years to show mature leaf size.

When to plant

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

How deep

Set the crown (where roots meet shoots) even with the soil surface. Plants from pots go at the same depth they grew.

Spacing

By mature size: minis 6–12 inches; medium 2 feet; giants 3–5 feet.

Soil

Rich, loamy, high in organic matter · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Mix in compost, composted manure or leaves. In clay, raise the planting area slightly so crowns don't sit wet over winter.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; morning sun).

Blue-leaved types keep their color best in shade. Gold types brighten with some morning sun; most scorch in hot afternoon sun.

New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Pointed shoots (eyes) push up in mid to late spring, later than many perennials, and unfurl over a couple of weeks. Small plants may stay dormant until May; a firm crown is alive.
