About the Product

Hope Springs Eternal has heart-shaped blue leaves held horizontally and trimmed with a crisp creamy white margin. Its standout feature is the deep ruffling that ripples along every leaf all the way to the pointed tip.

The plant forms a formal, tidy clump about 22 inches tall and 24 to 32 inches wide and grows quickly. Near-white flowers rise on tall stems in early to midsummer. It was named a national Hosta of the Year for 2026 and makes a fine specimen.

What it looks like

A formal, symmetrical clump about 22 inches tall and 24 to 32 inches wide of heart-shaped blue leaves held horizontally, each with a crisp creamy white margin and deep ruffles undulating all the way to the pointed tip. In early to midsummer, tall stems up to about 47 inches carry near-white bell flowers well above the foliage. At peak the plant is a neat, wavy blue-and-cream mound with tall pale flower spikes.

Growing it with lavender

Keep it out of the lavender field and plant it in a moist, shaded bed where it can pair with coral bells, ferns and bleeding hearts.

Care

Grows best in part to full shade. Give it evenly moist, humus-rich soil that drains well, and water during dry spells; hardy in zones 3-9. Cut the foliage down after hard frost, and divide crowded clumps in spring as new shoots appear. Watch for slugs in damp springs.

How to grow Hope Springs Eternal

Hosta · Hosta

Hostas want shade to part shade and rich, moist, well-drained soil. Blue and big-leaved types (like H. sieboldiana) need the most shade; many gold and fragrant types tolerate more sun.

Hardy in zones 3a–9b

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant 20-cell plugs straight into the garden or a 1-gallon pot; pot 72-cell plugs into 4-inch pots to bulk up first. Keep in shade and evenly moist. Plugs take 3–5 years to show mature leaf size.

When to plant

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

How deep

Set the crown (where roots meet shoots) even with the soil surface. Plants from pots go at the same depth they grew.

Spacing

By mature size: minis 6–12 inches; medium 2 feet; giants 3–5 feet.

Soil

Rich, loamy, high in organic matter · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Mix in compost, composted manure or leaves. In clay, raise the planting area slightly so crowns don't sit wet over winter.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; morning sun).

Blue-leaved types keep their color best in shade. Gold types brighten with some morning sun; most scorch in hot afternoon sun.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Pointed shoots (eyes) push up in mid to late spring, later than many perennials, and unfurl over a couple of weeks. Small plants may stay dormant until May; a firm crown is alive.
