About the Product

Ice Dance has wider, strappy leaves than most sedges, dark green with crisp white edges, so it reads clearly from a distance in the shade garden. It holds its foliage through much of the year.

It slowly spreads to form a low patch 12 to 16 inches tall, making it a handsome groundcover under trees or a bold filler in shady pots. Small cream flower spikes appear in spring, but the leaves are the real attraction.

What it looks like

Glossy, strap-shaped leaves ¼ to ½ inch wide are dark green with bright white margins. They arch outward from the crown in a dense, rounded clump 12 to 16 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide that slowly spreads into a mat. In mid-spring, small creamy white, bottlebrush-like flower spikes rise a few inches above the leaves. Most of the season the plant is a crisp, fountain-shaped clump of green and white.

Growing it with lavender

Ice Dance likes shade and moisture, so use it under trees or in a shady bed rather than in the lavender garden.

Care

Grows in part to full shade, and tolerates more sun with steady moisture; plant in average to moist soil. Hardy in zones 5 to 9. Trim tired leaves in early spring; it spreads slowly by runners.

How to grow Ice Dance

Sedge · Carex morrowii

Sedges are grassy clumps for part shade and moist soil. Japanese types (C. oshimensis, C. morrowii) are evergreen, the native woodland type (C. laxiculmis) handles dry shade, and Bowles' Golden (C. elata) loves wet soil.

Hardy in zones 5a–9b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant 72-cell plugs directly in spring or fall, or pot up into 4-inch pots to grow on. Keep moist and out of hot sun until new growth shows.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Plant at the same depth as in the plug, with the base of the leaves at soil level.

Spacing

12–18 inches apart for most; up to 24 inches for Bowles' Golden.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add compost to hold moisture. C. elata will grow in boggy soil or pond edges; others need moisture but not standing water.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; morning sun).

Gold-leaved types like Bowles' Golden color best with some sun if kept wet; hot afternoon sun scorches Japanese sedges.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Japanese sedges stay evergreen and may look tattered after winter; new blades push up in spring. C. elata dies back and re-sprouts in mid-spring.
