About the Product

Jack Frost is a classic shade perennial with heart-shaped leaves so heavily frosted in silver that only the green veins show through, giving a crackled look. In mid to late spring, clusters of tiny baby blue flowers like forget-me-nots float above the shimmering foliage.

It forms a neat mound about a foot tall and handles heat better than older brunneras. It is lovely as a groundcover, in containers or in spring bouquets, and it holds an Award of Garden Merit. Deer tend to avoid it.

What it looks like

Airy sprays of tiny five-petaled flowers about a quarter inch across in baby blue with small yellow-white eyes, held several inches above the leaves on thin stems. Leaves are heart-shaped, 4 to 6 inches across, heavily overlaid with silver-white so that only a fine network of green veins and a thin green edge show, giving a crackled, frosted look. The plant is a neat, rounded mound 12 to 15 inches tall and wide. At peak bloom a haze of blue flowers hovers over the silver leaves.

Growing it with lavender

Brunnera needs shade and evenly moist soil, so it belongs in a shade garden with hostas and ferns rather than in a sunny lavender bed.

Care

Plant in part to full shade in humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist; protect from hot afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8. Remove spent flower stems after bloom and trim tattered leaves as needed; it rarely needs dividing.

Hardy in zones 3a–8b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72- or 20-cell plugs into 4 in pots in shade, or plant straight into moist, rich soil once roots hold together. Shade new plugs from midday sun.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level, same depth as in the pot.

Spacing

18-24 in apart; leaves spread wider than you expect.

Soil

Humusy loam · pH 5.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix in compost or leaf mold and mulch to keep soil cool and moist. It adapts to acid or alkaline soil but not to dry soil.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade).

Avoid afternoon sun; silver-patterned leaves burn easily. Morning sun is fine if soil stays moist.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Leaves and sprays of tiny blue flowers appear together in early to mid spring. Big heart-shaped leaves fill in after bloom.
