About the Product

Jack of Diamonds is like a giant version of the classic silver brunnera, with huge heart-shaped leaves 9 to 10 inches across. The leaves overlap at the base in a swirl reminiscent of a snail shell, forming a nearly circular mound.

Each leaf carries a heavy silver overlay with wide, dark green veins. In mid to late spring, clusters of baby blue, forget-me-not-like flowers rise above the foliage. It grows about 15 inches tall and up to two and a half feet wide, lighting up shady beds.

What it looks like

Huge heart-shaped leaves 9 to 10 inches across with a heavy silver overlay and bold, wide dark green veins, overlapping at the base in a swirling, circular arrangement. In spring, airy sprays of tiny baby blue five-petaled flowers rise on stems up to about 30 inches. The foliage mound is circular, 14 to 16 inches tall and 28 to 32 inches wide. At peak bloom a cloud of blue flowers floats above the broad silver mound.

Growing it with lavender

Brunnera needs shade and evenly moist soil, so it belongs in a shade garden with hostas and ferns rather than in a sunny lavender bed.

Care

Plant in part to full shade in humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist; protect from hot afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8. Remove spent flower stems after bloom and trim tattered leaves as needed; it rarely needs dividing.

Hardy in zones 3a–8b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72- or 20-cell plugs into 4 in pots in shade, or plant straight into moist, rich soil once roots hold together. Shade new plugs from midday sun.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level, same depth as in the pot.

Spacing

18-24 in apart; leaves spread wider than you expect.

Soil

Humusy loam · pH 5.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix in compost or leaf mold and mulch to keep soil cool and moist. It adapts to acid or alkaline soil but not to dry soil.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade).

Avoid afternoon sun; silver-patterned leaves burn easily. Morning sun is fine if soil stays moist.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Leaves and sprays of tiny blue flowers appear together in early to mid spring. Big heart-shaped leaves fill in after bloom.
