About the Product

Jackson Valentine is a selection of our native fire pink with brilliant red, star-shaped flowers that are much showier than the wild plant. It blooms from late spring into early summer and is a reliable hummingbird magnet.

The straight species can be short-lived, but this selection has better vigor and persists in the garden. It is compact, about a foot tall, and thrives in sandy, gravelly or rocky spots, slopes and native plantings where other plants struggle.

What it looks like

Bright, true red, star-shaped flowers about 1.5 inches across, each with five narrow petals notched at the tips, held in loose clusters at the ends of slender, sticky stems. Flowers are scattered across the top of the plant rather than packed tightly. Leaves are narrow, lance-shaped and green, 2 to 4 inches long, mostly in a low basal rosette with pairs along the stems. The plant is a compact, upright clump 10 to 14 inches tall and 6 to 10 inches wide. At peak it looks like a small clump of scarlet stars floating above tidy green leaves.

Growing it with lavender

Fire pink handles the same lean, well-drained ground as lavender, and its bright red stars bloom just ahead of the lavender, adding a bold contrast along the sunny front edge of a lavender planting.

Care

Plant in full sun to part shade in dry to medium, well-drained soil; it does well in sandy, gravelly or rocky ground and tolerates drought, clay and shallow soil. Hardy in zones 4-8; avoid heavy mulch around the crown, and let a few flowers go to seed if you want new seedlings.

Hardy in zones 4a–8b

Spring after frost, or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away, set it in bright light out of harsh wind, and plant within a few days. If you wait, bump them into 3–4" pots. Harden off for a week before planting out, and keep the root ball moist the first 3–4 weeks.

When to plant

Spring after frost, or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; a little gravel around the crown helps prevent rot.

Spacing

About 12" apart.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or light loam; slightly acidic · pH 5.0–6.5

Fix-it tip: Add grit or plant on a slope or rock garden. Avoid rich, heavy soil that stays wet.

Sun

Part sun (tolerates full sun with afternoon shade; part shade).

Morning sun with afternoon shade suits it best.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Low rosettes of leaves green up in early spring, followed by bright red flowers in mid to late spring.
