About the Product

Kirigami Rose & Pink is a large-flowered columbine with dark rose sepals and lighter pink centers, held upward on strong stems. It blooms the first year from young plants, from late spring into early summer.

At about two feet tall, it fits nicely in borders, containers and cottage gardens, and it naturalizes well in partly shaded woodland borders. The flowers last up to two weeks when cut, and hummingbirds and bees visit them often.

What it looks like

Large, upward-facing flowers 2.5 to 3 inches across with five dark rose, pointed, petal-like sepals and long, slender rose spurs, surrounding a cup of light pink petals and a tuft of yellow stamens. Flowers sit on upright, branching stems above the foliage. Leaves are soft green, lobed and fan-like, forming a low basal mound. The plant is upright, 22 to 24 inches tall and 16 to 20 inches wide. At peak bloom rose-and-pink flowers stand above the mound facing upward.

Growing it with lavender

Columbine likes more moisture and some shade compared with lavender, so give it a spot in a partly shaded border or woodland edge, where it blooms in late spring before lavender begins.

Care

Grow in full sun to part shade in average, well-drained soil with regular moisture; afternoon shade extends the bloom. Hardy in USDA zones 4-9. Deadhead spent flowers to tidy the plant, or leave a few to self-sow; cut back tired foliage after bloom to get a fresh flush of leaves.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 3-4 in pots or plant directly once rooted. Columbine forms a taproot, so move plugs early and avoid repeated transplanting.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level, the same depth it grew in the pot. It has a deep taproot, so plant where it can stay.

Spacing

12-18 in apart.

Soil

Fertile loam or clay loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Add compost to sandy soil to hold moisture. In heavy clay, mix in compost and avoid low spots; crowns rot in standing water.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool areas; fairly deep shade).

Morning sun and afternoon shade is the sweet spot. Rocky Mountain columbine (A. caerulea) wants cool summers and good drainage.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

One of the first perennials up in spring; leaves may stay partly green all winter. Some foliage often looks ragged by late summer; that's normal.
