About the Product

Lady in Red is a selection of our native lady fern grown for its rich burgundy-red stems, which stand out clearly against lacy, dark green fronds. The red color builds as the plant matures, showing fully after its second winter.

At 30 to 36 inches tall, it is a graceful mid-border fern for shade. Plant it among dark-leaved coral bells or next to hostas, where the red stems really show, or use it in large shady containers.

What it looks like

Finely divided, lacy fronds about 2½ to 3 feet long are dark green with many narrow, toothed leaflets. The central stems and midribs are a vivid burgundy red that runs the full length of each frond. The fronds arch gently from the base to form an upright, vase-shaped clump 30 to 36 inches tall and about 24 inches wide. In summer the clump is full and airy, with red stems visible through the green lace.

Growing it with lavender

Lady in Red needs moist shade, so give it a spot in a woodland bed or a north-facing border rather than alongside sun-loving lavender.

Care

Plant in part to full shade in humus-rich soil kept evenly moist. Hardy in zones 3 to 8. Cut back old fronds in early spring; the red stem color deepens after the plant is established.

Hardy in zones 3a–8b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away and keep it in bright shade, never hot sun. Plant within a few days or move into 3–4" pots. Set each plug so its top is level with the soil, and keep it evenly moist for the first month.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil; don't bury the center where new fronds (fiddleheads) form.

Spacing

18–24" apart; larger lady ferns and giant painted types up to 30".

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 5.0–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add compost or leaf mold and mulch with shredded leaves. Lady ferns (A. filix-femina) want more moisture than Japanese painted ferns (A. niponicum).

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; painted ferns like some morning sun).

Japanese painted ferns color best with gentle morning light. Most lady ferns need shade; afternoon sun causes scorch and wilting.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Fronds unfurl in mid- to late spring, after many perennials; painted ferns can be especially late. Look for small fiddleheads at the crown before you worry.
