About the Product

Lady's mantle is loved for its soft, rounded, scalloped leaves, which catch dew and raindrops that sit on the surface like tiny beads of glass. From late spring into early summer, it sends up airy sprays of tiny chartreuse flowers that float over the foliage.

It forms a tidy clump about 15 to 18 inches tall and slowly spreads, making it a great edging, groundcover or filler plant. The flowers are a favorite filler in bouquets and dry well. It is easy to grow, holds an Award of Garden Merit, and deer and rabbits leave it alone.

What it looks like

Nearly round, softly hairy leaves 3 to 6 inches across with shallow lobes and scalloped, toothed edges, in soft gray-green, often holding silvery droplets of water. Above them rise loose, frothy sprays of tiny star-shaped flowers in chartreuse yellow-green. The plant forms a low, rounded, spreading clump 15 to 18 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom a haze of chartreuse flowers spills over and around the gray-green leaves.

Growing it with lavender

Lady's mantle wants more moisture and a bit of afternoon shade than lavender, so plant it along the outer, better-watered edge of the bed or in a partly shaded border where its chartreuse froth can still echo nearby lavender.

Care

Grows in full sun to part shade in average, well-drained soil with regular moisture; give it afternoon shade in hot, dry summers. Hardy in USDA zones 3-7. Shear off faded flowers before they set seed to limit self-sowing and to bring on a fresh flush of leaves.

How to grow Lady's Mantle

Lady's Mantle · Alchemilla mollis

Lady's mantle wants evenly moist, humus-rich soil and relief from hot afternoon sun. Give it that and it makes soft, scalloped mounds with frothy chartreuse flowers in early summer.

Hardy in zones 3a–7b

Spring after hard frost, or late summer to early fall with 6 weeks before freeze-up.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

72-cell plugs are tiny: pot them into 3–4 inch pots, keep moist in bright shade, and plant out once roots fill the pot. Harden off for a week before planting in the garden.

When to plant

Spring after hard frost, or late summer to early fall with 6 weeks before freeze-up.

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level, at the same depth it grew in the plug. Don't bury the crown.

Spacing

18–24 inches apart; mounds reach about 12–18 inches tall and 24 inches wide.

Soil

Rich, loamy, high in organic matter · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Work compost into sandy soil so it holds moisture, and into heavy clay so the crown isn't sitting wet in winter.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool northern summers if the soil stays moist).

In hot, humid summers afternoon shade keeps the leaves from scorching and browning at the edges.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

New pleated leaves unfurl from the crown in mid-spring, often after many earlier perennials. Until then the crown looks like a small brown knob at soil level, which is normal.
