About the Product

Lemon Love brightens shady spots with slightly ruffled chartreuse leaves that turn more lime green in deeper shade. Its villosa background makes it a strong grower, and over the years it can slowly widen to about 3 feet if given room.

The plant stays 10 to 14 inches tall. Cream flowers with a blush of pink in the cups rise to about 20 inches in early to midsummer. It is a good choice for lighting up the base of trees, shade borders and large containers.

What it looks like

A wide, mounding plant 10 to 14 inches tall and 28 to 32 inches across of rounded, slightly ruffled leaves in bright chartreuse yellow, turning lime green in heavier shade. Slim stems about 20 inches tall carry loose spikes of tiny cream bells with faint pink blush in the calyces. At peak the plant is a glowing yellow-green mound with a light, creamy haze of flowers above.

Growing it with lavender

Lemon Love needs shade, so plant it away from the lavender in a shaded bed where its chartreuse leaves can brighten ferns, hostas and dark-leaved coral bells.

Care

Best in part to full shade; strong sun can scorch the light leaves. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil with steady moisture; hardy in zones 4-9. Give it room to spread, and trim spent flower stems and old leaves in spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
