Lemon Squeeze is a fountain grass with bright chartreuse-gold leaves that hold their color in full sun without scorching. It grows vigorously into a wide, arching mound about 3 to 3½ feet tall and 4 feet across.
From midsummer into fall, copper plumes rise above the gold foliage, giving three seasons of interest. It is a great way to add bright contrast to a sunny garden, and deer leave it alone.
What it looks like
Narrow, arching leaves about ¼ to ⅜ inch wide are bright chartreuse gold, most vivid in full sun. They form a broad, rounded, fountain-like mound 36 to 42 inches tall and 48 to 54 inches wide. From midsummer into early fall, fuzzy, cylindrical bottlebrush plumes in coppery tan rise above the leaves on arching stems. At peak the plant is a glowing gold fountain topped with a spray of copper plumes.
Growing it with lavender
Lemon Squeeze thrives in full sun like lavender, and its chartreuse-gold leaves make a bright color contrast against lavender's purple spikes.
Care
Plant in full sun for the brightest gold, in average to fertile, well-drained soil; it tolerates dry spells once established. Hardy in zones 5 to 9. Cut back to a few inches in early spring.
