Little Miss Sunshine is a groundcover stonecrop prized for its very dark green, glossy leaves and neat, compact habit. From early to midsummer, clusters of small yellow flowers cover the mat.
It stays 6 to 8 inches tall and is ideal for rock gardens, container combinations and the front of a sunny border. Once established it handles heat and drought easily, and rabbits leave it alone.
What it looks like
Small, fleshy, rounded to spoon-shaped leaves about 1 inch long in very dark green with a glossy, polished surface, crowded along short, spreading stems. From early summer, flat clusters of tiny bright yellow star-shaped flowers cover the top of the plant. The plant is a low, tidy mat 6 to 8 inches tall and 18 to 20 inches wide. At peak bloom it looks like a glossy dark green cushion covered in yellow.
Growing it with lavender
This low sedum thrives in the same hot, sunny, well-drained ground as lavender, making a tidy succulent carpet along the front edge of a lavender bed or between stepping stones.
Care
Plant in full sun in average to poor, well-drained soil; it is very drought tolerant and does not like wet feet. Hardy in zones 3-9; trim off faded flower stems after bloom if you want a neater mat, and divide or replant pieces anywhere you want it to fill in.
