The Mad About You Mix is an assortment of mangaves, hybrids between agave and manfreda that combine the neat, sculptural rosettes of agave with the faster growth and bold spotting of manfreda. Each plant in the mix brings its own color and pattern.
These are compact plants, generally 6 to 10 inches tall and 14 to 20 inches wide, perfect for containers, patio displays and sunny rock gardens. They are drought tolerant, and deer and rabbits leave them alone.
What it looks like
A mix of compact, succulent rosettes about 6 to 10 inches tall and 14 to 20 inches wide. Leaves are thick, fleshy and lance-shaped, in shades ranging from silvery blue-green to olive and lime green. Many are speckled, flecked or banded with burgundy, red or purple spots, and some have cream margins. The rosettes are symmetrical and open, with small soft spines along the edges and at the tips. Together, a group looks like a colorful collection of spotted, star-shaped succulents.
Growing it with lavender
Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.
Care
Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zones 8 to 10.
